The Council invests in a lot of money in collecting our rubbish week in, week out. It has spent a lot buying dustbins, not just one, but, three - (black, blue and brown); to help us get rid of the unwanted, recycle the reusable and compost the organic.

I raise my hat and commend the thousands of households who spare a thought about what needs to go in each of the provided bins, rinse out the contents of the blue bins and wrap the kitchen wastes in used newspapers to contain the odour till the next collection day, so as to maintain a cordial relationship with their neighbours. I applaud those who ensure the bins are not overfilled, covered and correctly placed in a location allowing easy access for the bin collecting teams, then do a spot of ‘litter picking’ after the men have gone.

I appeal to the other households who might not fully fit into the aforementioned group, those who still mistakenly put too much rubbish in the bins, forget to fully close the bins making them into ‘crocodile’ bins and sometimes place the bins such that they might be inaccessible to the unfamiliar bin men. I understand that sometimes these things happen and its not that they are intended; maybe we’re in a rush, or are pre-occupied with ‘life issues’.

However, I’d like us all to remember that our homes are not just houses but our castles and how we treat our homes determines a lot. It can foster or         hinder our relationships with the neighbours. It influences how our homes, streets and town are perceived; by outsiders and us. It might also indirectly cost us more to clean up the rubbish of others around their homes.

Just as one famous supermarket says “Every little helps”, a little more consideration would go a long way in improving the surroundings of our homes. We live in Hatfield so let’s all own it. If you treat your castle right and I do the same, then our little Town will start to rival the big Cities.

Remember, “Your Town Needs You”, lets “Keep Hatfield Clean”!
