Conservative-run Hertfordshire County Council has published its plans to stop sending waste to landfill sites by the year 2025, after it signed a series of new contracts.
Any waste the council produces will be sent to an energy recovery facility, if it cannot be otherwise re-used or re-cycled.
Currently, the 48% of non-recyclable waste HCC produces is split between such energy facilities and landfill sites.
But once the new long-term contracts come into play, all waste produced by the council will go to energy recovery facilities.
HCC's Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Eric Buckmaster said: "“We want to create a cleaner and greener environment in Hertfordshire, so being able to stop sending waste to landfill sites is really a significant step for us."
"Of course, we want to help our residents throw away less, and to reuse or recycle as much as possible, but we’re still left with around 250,000 tonnes a year that we need to dispose of, and these new contracts will help us do that in a more environmentally sustainable way.”
